As a small family-run business, we understand how stressful it can be to learn that your child requires an educational psychological assessment.

It's completely natural to have a myriad of questions about this assessment. For the peace of mind of parents and family members, we would like to answer some of the most common questions surrounding educational psychological assessments.

What is an educational assessment?

Not everyone will know about psychological educational assessments, particularly those outside the psychological and educational spheres.

An educational assessment is designed to assess an individual's IQ and cognitive ability. Various tests are designed to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of an individual's intellectual functioning. An educational psychological assessment is often required when a child or person is suspected of having a learning difficulty such as ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia or a learning disability.

What does an educational assessment entail?

An educational assessment includes different elements. First and foremost, it will include assessing background information on the child. This information will be provided by the child's parent, the school and of course, directly from the child. The actual assessment includes psychometric tests. These psychometric tests measure a person's mental capabilities and their unique behavioural style. Some recommendations for treatments post an educational assessment can consist of speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or an educational training program.

How long does an educational assessment take?

In total, an educational assessment usually lasts about three hours. All background information will be collected before the evaluation at the initial consultation. The results of this test are then compiled into a report which usually takes several weeks to complete.
